Finding glimmers during a hard time
What are glimmers?
Glimmers are small moments of joy that happen throughout the day. They can be simple, everyday events, and don’t need to be huge or groundbreaking.
Why do they matter?
When we’re going through a hard time, we sometimes struggle to see these moments of joy. If we tune in, stay present, and pay attention, glimmers are all around us. Glimmers allow us to remember that there is good even in hard times.
How can this help me?
We so often focus on the negative (and there’s so much hard stuff going on around us, so sometimes that’s valid). Focusing on glimmers helps us find some balance, hope, and remember that no matter what, there is good in the world around us. Glimmers have the power to disrupt our automatic negative thought processes.
How do you use this concept in therapy?
I love to talk about glimmers in therapy! This might look like a client showing up and telling me one good thing that happened this week. We are here to process the tough stuff, yes, but we can always make time to focus on the beautiful moments, too. I also like to encourage clients to apply the glimmer focus on their daily life, whether it’s through journaling, creating art, or using a glimmer to resource at a later time when they may be struggling.
Examples of glimmers:
Seeing a rainbow
A beautiful sunset
The sun shining on your face
A special treat or drink you enjoy
Spotting a ladybug
Snuggles with your pet
An expression of love from someone
Feeling supported by your community
Now that you know what glimmers are, you can look out for them in your everyday life! What are your favorite glimmer moments that you’ve experienced?
